1826 Silkwork Sampler by Hannah Clark

George IV, dated 1826. 12ins by 11.75ins wide. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours brown, cream, blue, pale blue, dark brown, copper, pink, green and dark green.

Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and numbers 1-6.

Verse reads

'IN GABRIEL S HAND A MIGHTY STONE

LIES A FAIR TYPE OF BABYLON

PROPHETS REJOICE AND ALL YE SAINTS

GOD SHALL AVENGE YOUR LONG COMPLAINTS'.

Signed and dated

'Hannah clark Work this Piece In the 15 Year of her aGe June 5 1826'.

Packed with motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,

rabbits,

dogs,

angels,

flowers, birds,

fruit baskets,

fir trees,

crowns,

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Good. A few holes, illustrated.

A few pale stains and a speck, illustrated.

No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition.
