Circa 1830 Silkwork House Sampler
Circa 1830. 17ins by 12.5ins wide. Framed in an old, burr maple and gilt frame with rippled, old glass. Stitched to linen with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.


Meandering strawberry border.

Colours light blue, dark brown, copper, gold, black, dark green and pink. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and numbers 1-13.
Verse reads
'JESUS permit thy gracious name to stand
As the first effort of an infants hand
And while her fingers on the canvas move
Engage her tender heart to seek thy love
With thy dear children let her share apart
And write her name thy self upon her heart'.

No signature or date.
A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a garden,

birds,

fruit baskets,

trees,




hearts,
a ribbon,

crowns,

flowers




and potted flowering plants.




CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes, worst illustrated.





A few light patchy stains, illustrated, and slight uniform age darkening of the ground.


Minor stitch losses to number 4, letters E and J, and to holed areas, illustrated.



Retouching to some of the threads, illustrated.



Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang (metal hanging hook to reverse).
