1823 Sampler by Margaret Bowman

George IV, dated 1823. 22ins by 16ins wide. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood and gilt frame with two hanging hooks to top and glass. Stitched to linen with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk and fine wool on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours red, blue, green, pale blue, dark brown, pink, olive green, orange, black and cream.

Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case, numbers 1-8 and family initials.

Verse reads

'The Lord giveth and

The Lord taketh away

Blessed be the

Name of the Lord'.

Signed and dated 'Margaret Bowman worked this in her 13 year 1823'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a garden,

an Ark,

a dog,

flowers, birds,

fruit baskets,

potted flowering plants,

fir trees, rabbits,

hearts, diamonds,

crowns,

the sun,

squirrels

and peacocks.

CONDITION: Good. One small hole, and a few pulls to ground, worst illustrated.

No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.

Minor stitch losses to border, worst illustrated.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.

Very slight colour run around the black threads of verse, worst illustrated.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, illustrated, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
