1836 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Jackson
William IV, dated 1836. 21.75ins by 17.5ins wide. Framed in an old, possibly original, gilt and wood frame with rippled, old glass. Fixed to a wood stretcher frame with paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches.


Meandering strawberry and floral border.

Colours deep pink, cream, blue, green, pale blue, dark brown, black, light green, copper and gold.
Verse reads
'Jesus Permit thy gracious name to stand
As the first effort of an infants hand
And while her fingers on the canvass move
Engage her tender heart to seek thy Love
With thy dear children Let her have a Part
And Write thy name O Lord upon her heart'.

Signed and dated 'Elizabeth . Jackson Work in the 10th Year of her Age August 15th 1836'.



A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including a garden summer house flanked by trees,

crowned lions,

stars,

dogs,

owls,

swans,

ducks,

peacocks,

birds,





flowers,




potted flowering plants,




stags, fruit baskets,


hearts, diamonds,

crowns,


titled figure of Moses and Christ,


butterflies,


two couples, each standing one either side of a flowering tree,

and angels.


CONDITION: Good to Very Good. No holes.
Staining to border on both sides, and uniform age darkening of the ground in places, all illustrated.



No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing very slight wear, illustrated, otherwise sound and ready to hang.



Gilt retouched in two places, illustrated.
