1821 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Dainty
George IV, dated 1821. 12.5ins by 12.25ins wide. Unframed. Stitched to material backing.


The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in variety of stitches including Algerian eye.


Meandering strawberry border.

Colour is black throughout. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and numbers 1-12.
Verse reads
'Religion what treasure untold
Resides in that heavenly word
More precious than silver or gold
Or all that this earth can afford'.

Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Dainty Welford Nov 2 1821'. Welford is a town in Northamptonshire, England.



A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants,

birds, flowers,


a cross, a heart, a diamond, a crown,

fir trees and others.

CONDITION: Fair. A number of holes, worst illustrated.




One pale patchy stain to centre and another smaller one below, illustrated.


No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours is all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
