George III, dated 3 July 1819. 17ins by 12ins wide. 1819 Scottish Woolwork Sampler by Elisabeth Gellie. Framed in a wood frame with glass.

Stitched to linen with wood backing.

The sampler is worked in fine wool on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case, numbers 1-10,

and family initials.

Signed and dated

'BALMAD 3 JULY 1819 Elisabeth Gellie'.

Perhaps supposed to be Balmedie in Aberdeen, Scotland.

A few motifs including birds,

stags,

a heart,

diamond and potted flowering plant.

Sister sampler by Margaret Gellie also available at the time of listing.

CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes.

Some patchy staining.

Minor stitch losses to the border,

one divider line and the date.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Unevenly stretched.

Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
