1828 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Hart

George IV, dated 1828. 15.5ins by 12.25ins wide. 1828 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Hart. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to a wooded stretcher frame with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, cream, pale blue, dark brown, black and gold.

Family initials.

Verse titled

'Pythagoras's golden verse.'

reads

'First unto God thy humble homage pay,

The greatest this, and first of laws obey.

Perform thy vows, observe thy plighted troth;

And let religion bind thee to thy oath.

With lowly duty to thy parents bow,

And grace and favour to thy kindred show.

From each dishonest shameful act forbear,

Of others and thyself alike beware.

Let rev'rence of thyself thy thoughts controul

And guard the sacred temple of thy soul.'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Hart Aged 13 Years. 1828'.

A good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including flowers,

dogs,

fruit baskets,

fir trees,

crowns,

fruit trees,

peacocks and birds.

CONDITION: Good. No holes.

A number of stain specks and uniform age darkening of the ground inside the stretcher frame.

No stitch losses.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
