George III, dated 29 July 1816. 21ins by 10ins wide. 1816 Scottish Woolwork Sampler by Margaret Gellie. Framed in a wood frame with glass.
Stitched to linen with wood backing.
The sampler is worked in fine wool on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours olive green, black, pink, light green, red and pale blue.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case, numbers 1-10,
and family initials.
Signed and dated
'BALMAD 29 JULY 1816 Marget Gellie'.
Perhaps supposed to be Balmedie in Aberdeen, Scotland.
A few motifs including peacocks and a potted flowering plant.
Sister sampler by Elisabeth Gellie also available at the time of listing.
CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes.
One repair.
A few small stains and specks.
Minor stitch losses to the border,
divider lines,
letters of the alphabet,
numbers and family initials.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
