1826 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Buck
George IV, dated 1826. 16ins by 12ins wide. 1826 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Buck. Framed in an old, possibly original, mahogany veneer frame with gilt slip and glass.

Stitched to card with card backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours pink, cream, copper, black, light green, dark green and gold.
Verse titled 'Of Jerusalem' reads
'View but her ancient and her present state,
No city ever such various fate,
Once for magnificence and wealth renowned;
And oft beset by judgments all around,
Gentiles at first then Jews possessed the place,
Christians came next and last the turkish race.'.
Signed and dated
'Elizabeth Buck Aged 11 Years 1826'.
A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,
dogs, birds, flowers,
hearts,
crowns,
fir trees,
windmill
and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good.
A number of holes and areas where the ground is wearing thin.
Several patchy stains.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
Slight colour run around the dark green threads.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
