1796 Silkwork Sampler by Anne Hughes
George III, dated 1796. 16.5ins by 11.25ins wide. 1796 Silkwork Sampler by Anne Hughes. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering grape and vine leaf border.
Colours green, blue, yellow, gold, black, grey and pink.
Verse entitled 'On Sensibility' reads
'O Sensibility' from thee doth flow
Whate'er is pure or worthy here below:
Depriv'd of thee. Alike the seasons roll.
Nor youth inspires. Nor age instructs the soul.
In vain the spring pours forth its balmy gales.
When thou art not. Its bloomy fragrance fails.
Almighty Father. Hear a suppliant prayer.
O take not from my heart this guiding star.'.

A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs showing a shepherdess seated beneath a tree, with two recumbent sheep by her side. Birds fly overhead and a house can be seen in the distance.
CONDITION: Good. A number of holes, and some loss of ground in the bottom right hand corner.
Some patchy stains in the top right corner.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.
Frame in very good condition. Wire and hooks included for hanging.
