Antique Sampler, 1761, by Sarah Learner - Cows

George II, dated 1761. 10.5ins high by 11ins wide. 1761 Sampler by Sarah Learner. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Rolling waves border.

Colours red, cream, pale blue, yellow and greens. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-10.

Verse reads

'The Lofs of Time

The Lofs of truth is

But the Lofs of Christ is such

That no man can'.

Signed and dated, 'Sarah Learner finished Sampler in the 14 year of her December the 18. 1761'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including two cows and a milkmaid,

flowers,

potted flowering plants,

fir trees,

crowns,

a bird and a lion.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A few holes, one has been repaired.

A few patchy stains.

Some stitch losses to the signature,

alphabet,

verse

and motifs.

Some colours very faded making them difficult to read.

Colour run around some of the blue threads.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
