Staffordshire Androcles & Lion figure

Victorian, circa 1860. 7.9ins high, 5.3ins wide, 2.4ins depth. Staffordshire figure with a theatrical and literary theme which features Androcles and the lion, seated on an oval base. Multi-coloured version. Dull gilt base line and embellishment.







Flatback, decorated mainly to the front. Vent hole to the reverse.



This piece represents the story of Androcles who was a runaway slave in one of Aesop's fables. He removed a thorn from the paw of an injured lion. Androcles is later captured and thrown into the arena to be killed by the lion. The lion recognized him and did not attack.

Maker's marks to the underside.
