George III, dated 1805. 16.5ins high, 7.4ins wide, 0.7ins deep. Georgian Sampler, 1805, Elizabeth Gregory, Ackworth School.

The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch.

Discontinuous half-medallion border.

Colours red, cream, copper, gold, green and blue.

Alphabet A-Z in upper case, scattered throughout.

Signed and dated, 'Elizabeth Gregory Ackworth School 1805'. Ackworth is a well known Quaker School near Pontefract, West Yorkshire, in England.

Various scattered motifs, including stylised flowering plants, potted plants, birds and trees. Numerous octagonal and polygonal medallions enclose a few of the motifs.

Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Mounting: The sampler is stitched to acid free card. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.

CONDITION: Good. Two small holes, bottom left. A few pale patchy stains, barely visible.

No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
