Antique Scottish Sampler, 1805, by Eliza McKune

George III, dated 1805. 17.8ins high, 13ins wide, 1ins deep. Georgian Scottish Sampler, 1805, by Eliza McKune.

The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch.

Meandering floral border.

Colours gold, red, green, black and blue.

Signed and dated, 'Eliza McKune 1805'.

A good set of motifs, including a wonderful house with a garden, smoke coming out of the chimneys.

Other motifs include flowers,

trees laden with fruit, fruit baskets,

fir trees, dogs

and rabbits.

Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.

CONDITION: Good. A few small, well backed holes.

A few pale patchy stains.

Stitch losses to the tree trunk on the right.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
