Ralph Wood Staffordshire Pearlware Figure of Saint Phillip

pre-Victorian, circa 1800. 14.4ins high, 4.9ins wide, 4.7ins depth. Ralph Wood Staffordshire Pottery pearlware figure with a religious theme which features a standing figure of Saint Phillip, stood on a marbleised base.

The piece is titled, 'St Phillip'.

Flatback, decorated mainly to the front.

This piece represents Saint Philip the Apostle was one of Jesus’ earliest followers, known for bringing others—like Nathanael—to Christ and for his role in several key Gospel moments. Tradition holds that he preached in Asia Minor after the Resurrection and was eventually martyred at Hierapolis.

Maker's mark, painted 'B' to the underside.

Condition

CONDITION: Good. A few flakes or abrasions here and there.

Kiln effect: firing crack to the reverse.

RESTORATION. Both thumbs remodelled.
