George Jones Majolica Africa Lions Compote

Victorian, circa 1872. 10.3ins high, 10.8ins wide, 10.8ins depth. George Jones Majolica compote which features a lion stood on one side and a lioness recumbent on the other.

A snake is rearing it's head from a hole.

All sit underneath a palm tree, which forms the bowl of the piece.

Lightly impressed, 'AFRICA' to the side of the foot.

Colouration: green, brown, turquoise, are predominant.

This piece represents the continent of Africa. It is one of a set of compotes by George Jones in the 'Continents’ series.

Bears a pattern number, '3287'. English diamond registration mark for the date ??.

Condition

CONDITION: Good. KILN EFFECTS: a few specks of kiln soot caught in the glaze to the rim of the bowl.

RESTORATION. The top is reglued and join retouched, where the trunk meets the leaves of the tree.

Two filled chips to the rim.

Filled chip to lioness ear.
