Antique Scottish Band Sampler, 1752, by MS

George II, dated 1752. 25.2ins high, 11.6ins wide, 0.8ins deep. Georgian Scottish Band Sampler, 1752, by MS.

The sampler is worked in wool threads on a dark homespun linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

A variety of horizontal patterned bands across the sampler.

Colours red, cream, green, dark brown, pink, black and blue.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case, numbers 1-10, and many family initials.

Signed and dated, '1752 M.S'.

Motifs include a figure

and crowns.

Framed in an old, black, ebonised wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Backed with card and sealed with tape.

CONDITION: Good. A couple of patchy stains.

Some stitch losses, some with associated thinning of the ground.

Colours are all good and strong.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
