The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.
Geometric bands in various patterns.
Colours green, blue, yellow, silver, brown and black.
Family initials, 'IH, MH, EH, EC, GB, MB'.
Inscription reads, 'When I Would have slept in perfect place. And so commanded my Thoughts To cease.'.
Signed and dated, 'Martha Hayter Her Sampler Finished august The 12 1741.'.
Wonderful boxer motifs across the middle band.
Framed in an old wood frame with glass.
Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.
CONDITION: Good. No holes. Very light stain across middle above boxers and down right hand side.
No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
