
Mid 17thC, dated 1649. 32.5ins high, 6ins wide, 0.75ins deep. 1649 band sampler by HW aged 8.
Worked in silks on linen ground, in a variety of fine stitches including raised work and Algerian eye. Simple line borders, multiple traditional complex design bands, one with motifs including frog, strawberry plant, ferns, dog, rabbit, birds and crosses, and dividers.
Colours blue, browns, greens, cream, pink and gold . Alphabet A-Z in upper case. Inscription reads, 'ANNO * DOMINI *1649 * HW * 8 *'.
Framed in an old, beaded mahogany frame with rippled, old glass.
Mounting: The sampler is secured top and bottom with acid free textile tape, otherwise loose mounted on linen over board. Frame backed and sealed with brown paper tape.
CONDITION: Good. A few small holes. Light staining around the top, left and bottom edges from 'atmospheric ingress'. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Frame showing slight wear, but presents well.
