Antique Band Sampler, 1659 by Ioane Giffer

Dated 1659. 33.5ins high, 7.9ins wide, 0.8ins deep. Antique Band Sampler, 1659, by Ioane Giffer.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a wonderful variety of stitches. Divider lines in many intricate patterns. Colours: blues, cream, yellow, greens and browns. Signed and dated, 'Ioane Giffer Love vertu 1659'. In the 17th century, 'love vertu' was sometimes used as an inscription inside a wedding or posy ring.

Consists of an incredible variety of elaborately worked floral and foliate bands, including a fabulous row of boxers.

Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with rippled, old glass.

Mounting: The sampler is fixed to card. Frame backed with wood.

CONDITION: Good. No holes.

There are two darker bands, where light has got to the sampler, through corresponding openings on the reverse (where the wood backing is absent).

They do not stand out particularly, because they fit with the overall patterning of the sampler.

No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
