The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours greens, blue, light brown, white, pink, gold and black.
'Next unto God dear parents I address
Myself to you in humble thankfulness
For all your care and charge on me bestow'd
The means of learning unto me allow'd
Go on I pray and let me still persue
Those golden Arts the vulgar never knew'.
Signed with initials and dated,
'Jane Elizabeth Ewan Aged 9 1823'.
A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden,
potted flowering plants,
Framed in a gilt over wood frame, with glass.
Mounting: The sampler is fixed to card. Frame backed with chipboard and paper.
A couple of holes to the bottom edge.
Slight patchy stain to top right corner.
No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
