Antique House Sampler, 1840 by Esther Nunn. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours green, cream, yellow, browns and black. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-24 Verse reads, 'The loss of friends is great>The loss of love…is more>The loss of christ is such>A…loss as no man can restore'. Signed and dated, '1840 Esther Nunn aged 13 years'. A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, dogs, birds, angels, flowers, potted flowering plants, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, crowns, hearts, squirrels diamonds and unusually, kettles. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wooden board. Frame backed with card.
