Regency period Sampler, 1827, by Mary Ann Ragen. The sampler is finely worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, red, gold, pink and brown. Verse reads, 'Remember now thy Creator in the Days of thy Youth, while the evil Days come not, nor the Years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; - Eccle.3-xii chap.1.verse. - Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither Poverty nor Riches; feed me with food convenient for me; lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.- Prov.-xxx chap.7.8.9 - verses.'. Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Ragen's work. 1827.'. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, dogs, birds, parrots, potted flowering plants, temples, fruit baskets, deer, trees and butterflies. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to card. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.
