Georgian Sampler, 1815, Ann Smith Aged 9. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, blue, red, yellow, copper, silver, pink and brown. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-21. Verse entitled 'A Rule of Life' reads, 'Fear God, let Prudence admonish thee, Let Temperance restrain, Let Justice guide thy Hand, Benevolence warm thy Heart, and Gratitude to Heaven inspire thee with Devotion. Then you will be happy in time, and Blessed in Eternity. And another verse, entitled 'The Desire', reads, 'From my Beginning, may the Almighty Powers Blessings bestow in never ceasing Showers! Oh! May I happy be, and always blest, of every Joy of every wish possessed, may Plenty dissipate all worldly Cares, and smiling Peace bless my revolving Years.'. Signed and dated 'Ann Smith May 3 1815 Aged 9 Years'. A variety of patterned bands feature throughout. A scattering of motifs, including potted flowering plants, crowns and trees. Framed in an old wood frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to card. Frame backed with cardboard and sealed with tape.
