Regency Sampler, 1820, by Mary Bishop. The sampler is worked in silk on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours pink, black, green, gold, blue, silver and brown. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-2. Verse reads, 'Teach me to feel anothers woe > To hide the faults I see > That mercy I to others show > That mercy show to me'. Signed and dated, 'Mary Bishop Aged 10 1820'. A good set of motifs, including a house, a lion, a dog, potted flowering plants, crowns, hearts, birds, a butterfly, a bee and flowers. Framed in an old, possibly original, Hogarth frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to linen and stretched over board. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.
