1819 Sampler by Ann Goddard. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours pink, green, light brown, gold, silver, blue and black. Signed and dated 'Anna Goddard finished this Work in the 11th Year of her age 1819'. A wonderful set of motifs, including a country scene at the bottom. The scene depicts a shepherd and sheepdog with a flock of sheep, a windmill and a gate. In the centre is a girl wearing a hat, riding a horse being led by a Native American wearing a headdress. Also, fruit baskets, potted flowering plants and dogs. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.
