Description - ID#22735
Sampler by Hannah Prince stitched in 1834. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of fine stitches. Meandering floral border and wreath of extraordinary variety and detail. Colours blue, yellow, green, pale green, light brown, dark brown, copper, silver, black, orange, cream and gold. Signed and dated, "Hannah Prince work in the 13th year of her age 1834", unusually, stitched into a complex geometric design. A strikingly personal set of motifs, comprising large Toucan, Paroquet [sic], Cockatoo, Parrot, two butterflies, deer, zebra and flower pots, all in unusually accurate detail except for the zebra which appears to be Hannah's own design. Framed in its original mahogany frame with spacers added to provide an air gap. Glazed with Tru Vue museum glass - which has UV protection, non-reflective properties and great clarity. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame held in position with canvas clamps. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.
