Antique Sampler, 1825, by Eliza King Aged Nine. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering floral border. Colours green, blue, gold, light brown and white. Verse reads, 'Tis not enough to say > We are sorry and repent > Yet still go on from day to day > Just as we always went > Repentance is to leave > The sins we loved before > And show that we in earnest grieve > By doing so no more.'. Signed and dated 'Eliza King Aged Nine Years 1825'. A wonderful set of motifs, including a country cottage with a garden, a variety of figures: a lady gardening, girls carry fruit baskets, shepherds, a couple holding hands, sheep, fir trees, lions, potted flowering plants and birds. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.
