1824 Adam & Eve Sampler by Eliza Cookson. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with glass. Glued to chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours pale blue, green, dark brown, gold, white, black, yellow and pink. Verse entitled 'The blood of Jesus' reads 'My various powers awake>To sound redeeming grace>To him that washed us in his blood>Ascribe eternal praise'. Signed and dated 'Eliza Cookson marked this in the 13 year of her age 1824'. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, birds, a house, angels, flowers, potted flowering plants, hearts, thistles, a shepherd and shepherdess with sheep, dogs and butterflies
