Description - ID#23193
Queen Anne Sampler, 1711, by Miss Jefferson Aged 11. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Features variety of wonderful horizontal patterned bands across the sampler. Colours red, green, silver, blue and light brown. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Verses are difficult to read - partly due to faded light colours, but also because some very peculiar spelling. I have attempted to transcribe what I see, which follows. 'When Thou Are Art *Rich? Thou Maney Frinds, Shall ???iend When Richens Faills Frinds, Sown Will Prove Unkind'. 'When Fortuen Frovnds And Nothing Hits Then Fear WreLL Frinds And God oey ??arcy Wits'. 'De fitkest Iefferson ended Her Sampler in the 11 year of her age 1711.'. 'The Lott Of Saints Hath Been Afflictions Wants And Scorns. And He That Was The Best Or Men Was Mockt And Crownd With Thorns.'. 'Love The Lord And He Will Be T? Father Unto The. Dorens Jefferson Ended Her Sampler In The Year Of Her Age 1711.'. The first name of the signature is unclear, but the surname and date, 'Jefferson 1711' are very clear. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with wood and sealed with tape.
