Antique samplers – a\u00a0selection of\u00a0 interesting verse samplers<\/h1>\n

Before we get started here’s a question.\u00a0 May\u00a0one overlook fading when evaluating antique samplers?<\/p>\n

If\u00a0a sampler is appealing enough in other respects we think you may, but as always it is\u00a0a matter\u00a0for individual taste.<\/p>\n

1787 Antique sampler – Some men get riches…<\/h2>\n

Here is an example of an antique\u00a0sampler with a fairly early date, a great verse, a strong strawberry border and a\u00a0circa 1860 Hogarth frame\u00a0that makes\u00a0it a\u00a0darling despite the\u00a0fading.<\/p>\n

By the hand of providence the heavy stitching or stronger color in the thread\u00a0allows the verse to\u00a0stand out. Take a look at the sampler to see what I mean: 1787 verse sampler<\/a><\/p>\n

“Some men get riches, yet are always poor, some get no riches yet have all things store.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“How very true”\u00a0we murmur. A verse like this\u00a0means something to everyone.\u00a0The words will\u00a0be as true\u00a0two centuries from\u00a0now\u00a0as\u00a0they were\u00a0228 years ago when the sampler was\u00a0stitched by Mary Ann Shepherd.<\/p>\n

Quotations from the Book of Proverbs are as popular today as ever they were in the past. This pithy epithet is typical. While families\u00a0remain the bedrock of society it will never lose it’s power.<\/p>\n

The Drowning Fly –\u00a0 a rare antique sampler verse<\/strong><\/h2>\n

An unusual verse immediately\u00a0arouses curiosity:<\/p>\n

Where does the material come from?<\/p>\n

Might\u00a0the governess of\u00a0this seven year old girl have had\u00a0the imagination to write something original? And if she did would such behaviour from an employee have been acceptable?<\/p>\n

Or would she\u00a0ask her employer,\u00a0the girl’s mother, to choose a text? Could it have come from\u00a0the bible,\u00a0a treatise, a play, a sermon, a magazine, a newspaper?<\/p>\n

I could not help but google a phrase\u00a0trying to\u00a0find the source.\u00a0And\u00a0here it is. Probably an ‘approved’\u00a0publication widely read by ladies of the day.<\/p>\n

My guess is that seven year old Ann was curious about insects, flies in particular. Mom chose this poem for her sampler\u00a0in the hopes that it might hold her daughter’s interest long enough\u00a0for her to absorb the subject matter of the\u00a0verse.<\/p>\n

It is fun trying to\u00a0guess what was in\u00a0the minds of families living generations ago. Isn’t this part of the attraction of\u00a0antique samplers?<\/p>\n

They add color to our understanding of society\u00a0in\u00a0a particular\u00a0era, which is\u00a0in this\u00a0example\u00a0is\u00a0late\u00a0Georgian.\u00a0In the US, while this sampler was being stitched\u00a0during the year of\u00a01820, James Monroe was elected president effectively unopposed.<\/p>\n

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has the finest antique sampler collection on the planet. The samplers are to die for.\u00a0No article on\u00a0verse samplers can\u00a0fail to\u00a0mention the world’s foremost (in our opinion).\u00a0The verse\u00a0begins<\/p>\n

“As I cannot write I put this down simply and freely as I might speak to a person to whose intimacy and tenderness I can fully entrust myself and who I know will bear with all my weaknesses.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
