Prattware figures are earthenware, with decoration painted directly onto the dry clay, then covered with plain lead glaze. They were made between 1780 and 1840. Pearlware figures, made between 1800 and 1840, are earthenware, covered with a plain lead glaze, fired, then painted with coloured enamels over the glaze. Early Staffordshire figures depict an idyllic pre-industrial England with animals, travelling menageries, rural character groups, buildings, and theatre, standing either alone, or in front of a tree-like ‘bocage’, alongside brutal pastimes like bare-fist fighting and bull-baiting.
