
Circa 1890. 6.7ins high, 5.9ins wide, 5.9ins depth. Mafra Portuguese Palissy Majolica flower holder which features a monkey riding on the back of a tortoise.
Colouration: brown, grey, green, are predominant.
This piece represents 'Sloth and Mischief', originally an artwork by L.A. Malpempre.
The piece bears maker's marks for the Mafra pottery.
CONDITION: Good.
KILN EFFECTS: a few specks of kiln detritus caught in the glaze.
RESTORATION. Filled chip to end of monkey's tail and left ear.
Retouched flake to tortoise's chin and monkey's right ear.
