1779 Map of the World Sampler by Ann Philips

George III, dated 1779. 15ins by 28.5ins wide. 1779 World Map Sampler by Ann Philips. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, old glass.

Fixed to card.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Simple line border.

Colours blue, cream, red, copper, black, green and pink. Sampler depicts a map of the world, presented in two circles.

Titled, 'THE WORLD'.

Signed and dated 'ANN PHILIPS AUGUST THE 3OTH 1779'.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.

A tear to the bottom of the right hand side map.

A few pale stains.No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Some colours very faded making them difficult to read. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
