Antique Sampler, 1829, by Ann Swain

George IV, dated 1829. 16.5ins high by 16.5ins wide. 1829 House & windmill sampler by Ann Swain. Probably Scottish.

Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Fixed to card backing.

The sampler is worked in silk, cotton and fine wool on a canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours red, blue, pale blue, pale green, white, black, pink, light brown and orange. Alphabets A-Z in upper case.

Verse reads,

'Be thou faithful unto

death

And I will give thee a

crown of Life'.

Signed and dated,

'Ann Swain Aged 12 1829'.

A good set of motifs, including a windmill,

dogs,

birds,

angels,

potted flowering plants,

spotted stags,

temples,

fruit baskets,

blossoming trees,

crown

and a house with a garden and beehives.

CONDITION: Good.

No holes.

A few stain specks.

Some stitch losses to letters of the alphabet, border

and motifs.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

Slight colour run around some of the black threads.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
