
George III, dated 1788. 12.5ins by 12ins wide. 1788 Sampler by Elizabeth Beavan. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.
Tacked onto a wooden stretcher frame.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Simple embroidered outer border, with inner meandering floral border.
Colours green, blue, copper, gold, pink, brown and cream.
Verse entitled,
'On the Nativity'
reads,
'Behold he comes all nature Wears a smile
He comes in holinefs retreat O guile
He comes a babe adore the cherub face
Adornd with smiles each smile rePlete with grace
Each faithful son of zion cry aloud
Great is thy Saviour and supreme thy God'.

A good set of motifs, including fir trees,
lions,
birds,
crowns,
hearts,
jugs,
and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good.
A number of holes, some repaired.
A few pale stains.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
