1803 Darning Sampler by Elizabeth Clark

George III, dated 1803. 12.5ins high by 12.5ins wide. 1803 Darning Sampler by Elizabeth Clark.

Framed in an old, possibly original, ebonised wooden frame, with rippled, old glass.

Fixed to linen with chipboard and brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours gold, cream, pale blue, black, red and green.

Signed and dated

'ELIZABETH CLARK Apr 25 1803'.

Comprises of darning panels, worked in various different styles and patterns,

with a central floral motif,

and flowers to the four corners.

CONDITION: Generally good.

Small old tack holes to the outer edge.

A number of stain specks.

No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
