
Victorian, dated 1845. 17ins by 13ins wide. 1845 Sampler by Ann Johnson. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Fixed to a wood stretcher frame.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, green, brown and blue.
Verse reads 'Saviour divine thy sacred spirit send
Reveal thy Love and take me for thine own
Teach my young mind thy percepts to attend
And let thy merits for my guilt atome'
and 'Thanks to my friends for their care in my breeding
Who taught me betimes to love working and reading'.
Signed and dated 'Ann Johnson her Work in the 13th Year of her Age October 29th 1845'.
A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, birds, trees, laden with fruit, crown, potted flowering plants and stars.
CONDITION: Good. A few holes.
A few patchy stains.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
