Antique Sampler, 1840, by Sarah Stephens, Free Masons

Victorian, dated 1840. 19ins high by 16ins wide. 1840 'O. Youth!' Verse Sampler by Sarah Stephens, Royal Free Masons School. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.

Fixed to board.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Floral border.

Colours pink, greens and cream.

Verse entitled,

'O. YOUTH!'

reads,

'fear the Lord

ALL THE DAYS OF THY LIFE,

AND

WALK IN THE PATHS

which he hath prepared before thee;

THEREFORE

LET

TEMPERANCE restrain THEE,

PRUDENCE admonish THEE,

JUSTICE guide thy HAND

BENEVOLENCE warm thy HEART

Gratitude to Heaven AND with devotion;

INSPIRE THEE

These shall give thee happiness

IN THY PRESENT STATE

and

BRING THEE TO THE MANSIONS

of eternal felicity

IN THE PARADISE OF

GOD.'.

A few holes.

Patchy staining.

Some stitch losses and loose threads to the border.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
