Ralph Wood Staffordshire Medici Lion Figure

pre-Victorian, circa 1780. 7.5ins high, 10.9ins wide, 4.4ins depth. Ralph Wood Staffordshire Pottery figure which features a Medici lion, stood on a plinth base.

Brown version. Dull gilt embellishment. Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse.

Vent hole to the underside.

This piece represents the antique marble lions which stand at the entrance of the Loggia dei Lanzi, a building in Florence, Italy. Book reference ,'English Earthenware Figures 1740-1840' by Pat Halfpenny, page 96

Condition

CONDITION: Good. Small chip to lower base, rear- corner.

Minor small flakes to base edges.

Gilt almost entirely rubbed away.

KILN EFFECTS: glaze filled firing crack to chest.

Another shrinkage crack on rear back leg;

flecks of stray coloured glaze to the base.

RESTORATION. Stabilised and retouched crack to base side.

Retouched flake to upper base.
