Circa 1830. 17ins hight by 9.25ins wide. Scottish Sampler by Mary Johnston. Framed in an old wood frame with glass.
Loose mounted on card with card and brown paper backing.
The sampler is worked in fine wool and cotton on canvas ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Simple line border.
Colours red, orange, blue, pink, olive green and white. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case, numbers 1-22, and family initials.
Signed, but not dated, 'MARY JOHNSTON'.
A few motifs including potted flowering plants, flowers, peacocks and crowns.
CONDITION: Good. No holes. Slight patchy staining.
Some stitch losses to the 'A and B' in the large alphabet.
Colours are all good and strong with only slight fading to the blue. No colour run. Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
