Antique Sampler, 1816, by Mary Ann Toynton

George III, dated 1816. 17.5ins high by 13ins wide. 1816 Sampler by Mary Ann Toynton. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.

Fixed to linen with and card with chip board backing.

The sampler is worked in silk and wool on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Zig zag border.

Colours greens, cream, light brown, copper, gold, pink and black.

Verse reads,

'While youthfull fancy forms the letters fair,

Let me great God be thy peculiar care,

Subdue the eviel of my natal hour,

Direct my steps, uphold me by thy pow'r.

Nor e'er let vice eclipse the heavenly spark.

Oh_teach me virtue while I learn to work.'.

Signed and dated,

'MARY ANN TOYNTON. AGED 10 YEARS 1816'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a basket of flowers,

a large lion,

flowers,

butterflies

and a fir tree.

CONDITION: Good. No holes.

A few pale stain specks.

Some stitch losses to the signature and motifs.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Unevenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
