Antique Sampler, 1845, by Eliza Golding

Victorian, dated 1845. 15ins high by 13ins wide. 1845 Sampler by Eliza Golding.

Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Black paper backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, yellow, copper and brown.

Verse entitled

'The lilly of the Valley'

reads

'Come my love and do not spurn.

From a little flower to learn.

Let your temper be as sweet.

As the lily at your feet.

Be as gentle be as mild,

Be a modest simple child.

Pretty lillies seem to be Emblems of humilty

And the saviour from above

Views a humble child with love.'.

Signed and dated

'ELIZA GOLDING AGED ELEVEN YEARS 1845'.

A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants,

stars,

birds,

flowers,

fir trees,

and butterflies

CONDITION: Good.

A couple of holes.

A few patchy stains.

No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing wear and chips, and there is also a small chip to the edge of glass but all structurally sound.
