
William IV, dated 1831. 16.75ins high by 12.5ins wide. 1831 Sampler by Ann Piggott. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.
Stitched to linen with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours browns, cream, red, green, pale blue, pink, orange, greens and black.
Verse reads,
'Jesus permit thy sacred name to stand
As the first efforts of a youthful hand
And while her fingers on Canvas move
Engage her tender heart with ardent love'.
Signed and dated, 'Ann Piggott Aged 12 Years 1831'.
A wonderful set of motifs, including a lion, dogs, birds, flowers, trees, laden with fruit, rabbits, fruit baskets, fir trees, crowns, hearts, potted flowering plants and squirrels.
CONDITION: Good. A few holes around the border.
No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven, with rippling to the canvas ground.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
