
George III, dated 1803. 16ins high by 12.5ins wide. 1803 Sampler by Elizabeth Staines. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and old glass.
Stitched to linen and stretched onto card. Chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours reds, yellow, green, gold, white, black, blue and dark pink.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-12
Verse reads,
'JESUS permit thy gracious name to stand,
AS the first effort of an infant hand;
And while her fingers an the canvas move,
Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy.love.
With thy dear Children, let her have a part;
And write, thy name, thy self upon her heart.'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including potted flowering plants,
fir trees,
stags
and flowers
CONDITION: Good.
A few small holes.
Two pale stains.
Stitch losses to the border.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
