Antique Sampler, 1834, by Mary Farrall

William IV, dated 1834. 14.5ins by 15.5ins wide. 1834 Sampler by Mary Farrall. Framed in an old wood frame with glass.

Fixed to linen with wood backing.

The sampler is worked in thread on a canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours black, blue, green, brown and cream.

Verse reads

'Jesu permit thy gracious name to stand

As the first effort of a female hand

And whilst my fingers on the canvas move

Engage my tender heart to seek thy love'.

Signed and dated 'Mary Farrall Aged 10 1834'.

A good set of motifs, including a fruit tree with a snake wrapped around the turnk,

flowering plants,

dogs,

fruit baskets,

butterflies,

hearts,

fir tree

and birds.

CONDITION: Good. A few patchy stains.

No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
