Antique Sampler, c.1830, by Griscy Thortitons

William IV, dated 1830. 16.5ins high by 17.5ins wide. Circa 1830 Partridge Sampler by Griscy Thortitons. Framed in an old, probably original, rosewood frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours browns, pale blue, white, cream and greens.

Verse reads,

'Teach me to live that i may dread

The grave as little as my bed

Teach me to die that so i may

With joy behold the judgment day'.

'Griscy thortitons work in the 14th Year of her age'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a large Partridge titled 'Partridge Bird',

lions,

dogs,

a peacock,

flowers,

fruit baskets,

hearts, two houses

and birds.

CONDITION: Good. No holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
