
George IV, dated 1826. 14.5ins by 11.5ins wide. 1826 Sampler by Mary Herbert Skuse.
Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with glass.
Stitched to paper with wood and brown paper backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours brown, cream, red, green, copper, blue and black.
Verse reads,
'Blest Mary what a happy choice
And may I choose the same
To sit at Jesus sacred feet
And love is gracious name'.
Signed with initials and dated,
'Mary Herbert Skuse January th 25 1826'.
A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a women stood in the garden,
a girl under an arbour,
stars, potted flowering plants,
fruit baskets,
blossoming trees,
sheep
and birds including owls.
CONDITION: Generally Good.
One small hole.
Slight patchy staining.
No stitch losses (though, the letter H of 'His', appears to have been restitched at a later date).
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run.
Slightly unevenly stretched and stitches to the backing board are visible to the front in places.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
