Antique Scottish Sampler by Christian Gram

George III, circa 1800. 1.25ins by 12.5ins wide. Antique Scottish Sampler by Christian Gram. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with cardboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk and a silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering floral border.

Colours blues, cream, gold, pink, greens and red. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Much of the lettering has wonderful curlicue embellishment - typical of Scottish samplers.

Verse reads

'We praise thee,

O God: we acknow-

ledge thee to be the Lord.

All the earth doth

worfhip thee, the Father

everlafting.'

Signed 'Chriftian Gram'.

A scattering of motifs, including a dog,

flowers,

diamonds

and a heart.

CONDITION: Good. A number of small holes.

A few pale stains.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
