Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Bifrost Lidded Vase

Circa 1925. . Wedgwood fairyland lustre 'Bifrost' lidded vase, shape no. 2046. The vase is decorated with the Bifrost pattern on a flame orange lustre ground.

Roseberry bead border to top and bottom rims. Mother of pearl to the interior.

Wedgwood Portland vase maker's mark and, 'WEDGWOOD MADE IN ENGLAND'. Pattern number, 'Z5360 7' painted to the underside.

The Bifrost pattern relates to Scandinavian mythology from the Viking period. The castle on the vase represents the God Odin's castle, Gladsheim, in which the great hall of heroes, Valhalla could be found. The rainbow bridge, called 'Bifrost', was believed to be the only means of communication between the real world and the chief City of the Gods, Asgard, in which Odin's castle resided. The vase has various motifs, including ships, sacrificial goats drinking from a stream, fairies and others.

 

Condition

CONDITION: Very Good. No restoration. Slight rubbing to gilt.

KILN EFFECTS: small firing pit to rim.
